Ok, email to mobile- does anyone else use their mobile to notify them that they have email? In my case, hotmail and yahoo sends to my mobile the first few lines of email I receive in those accounts-beats checking to see if anything’s there all the time
Posted by: Macario Sakay at January 17, 2003 5:10 PM
Yes, that's precisely what I used to do before I got my Hiptop! I set up my account to send a forward copy as an SMS message to my Sprint phone. It would only deliver the first 160 characters, of course, but it was a way to know whether an important email had arrived while I was out in the field.
If my kung fu were a bit less pathetic than it is, I'd have written a customizable filter that let me direct only emails from a specific person to my phone.
Posted by: Clive at January 17, 2003 8:40 PM
Am I to take from this that text messaging is finally taking off in the States?
In the UK (and from what I'm told, the whole of Europe), SMS is probably the main use of mobile phones. Voice calls are secondary. It started as you've described, mainly amongst the kids, but now it's perfectly normal (for instance) for me to text my parents a quick question so as not to disturb them too much at work.

Baywatch's Carmen Electra Vin Diesel from Fast And The Furious Tara Reid from American Pie.
Went shopping in Omotesando Saturday - made sure to hit the Bathing Ape store this time. Bathing Ape is a brand of street wear (kind of like Fubu in a way) that is incredibly popular right now. I had even seen references to it while in the States (GQ for example included it in an article they had on Japanese fashion).

Since the Heap has no definite rules as to where it will create space for you, there must be some way of figuring out where your new space is. And the answer is, simply enough, addressing. When you create new space in the heap to hold your data, you get back an address that tells you where your new space is, so your bits can move in. This address is called a Pointer, and it's really just a hexadecimal number that points to a location in the heap. Since it's really just a number, it can be stored quite nicely into a variable.
Posted by: Effemia at January 20, 2004 12:00 PM
But some variables are immortal. These variables are declared outside of blocks, outside of functions. Since they don't have a block to exist in they are called global variables (as opposed to local variables), because they exist in all blocks, everywhere, and they never go out of scope. Although powerful, these kinds of variables are generally frowned upon because they encourage bad program design.
Posted by: Anchor at January 20, 2004 12:01 PM
The most basic duality that exists with variables is how the programmer sees them in a totally different way than the computer does. When you're typing away in Project Builder, your variables are normal words smashed together, like software titles from the 80s. You deal with them on this level, moving them around and passing them back and forth.
Posted by: Christopher at January 20, 2004 12:01 PM
This is another function provided for dealing with the heap. After you've created some space in the Heap, it's yours until you let go of it. When your program is done using it, you have to explicitly tell the computer that you don't need it anymore or the computer will save it for your future use (or until your program quits, when it knows you won't be needing the memory anymore). The call to simply tells the computer that you had this space, but you're done and the memory can be freed for use by something else later on.
Posted by: Nicholas at January 20, 2004 12:01 PM
Our next line looks familiar, except it starts with an asterisk. Again, we're using the star operator, and noting that this variable we're working with is a pointer. If we didn't, the computer would try to put the results of the right hand side of this statement (which evaluates to 6) into the pointer, overriding the value we need in the pointer, which is an address. This way, the computer knows to put the data not in the pointer, but into the place the pointer points to, which is in the Heap. So after this line, our int is living happily in the Heap, storing a value of 6, and our pointer tells us where that data is living.
Posted by: Jocosa at January 20, 2004 12:01 PM
This code should compile and run just fine, and you should see no changes in how the program works. So why did we do all of that?
Posted by: Roland at January 20, 2004 12:01 PM
Note the new asterisks whenever we reference favoriteNumber, except for that new line right before the return.
Posted by: Faustinus at January 20, 2004 12:02 PM
When compared to the Stack, the Heap is a simple thing to understand. All the memory that's left over is "in the Heap" (excepting some special cases and some reserve). There is little structure, but in return for this freedom of movement you must create and destroy any boundaries you need. And it is always possible that the heap might simply not have enough space for you.
Posted by: Evan at January 20, 2004 12:02 PM
Earlier I mentioned that variables can live in two different places. We're going to examine these two places one at a time, and we're going to start on the more familiar ground, which is called the Stack. Understanding the stack helps us understand the way programs run, and also helps us understand scope a little better.
Posted by: Heneage at January 20, 2004 12:02 PM
When a variable is finished with it's work, it does not go into retirement, and it is never mentioned again. Variables simply cease to exist, and the thirty-two bits of data that they held is released, so that some other variable may later use them.
