A "unionized shop" in NORTH KOREA?
Hey, I'm all about the nutty PR stunts, but maybe it wouldn't hurt Lasn to spend a moment or two pondering the actual facts of day-to-day life in that particular workers' paradise before he actually places the order.
Posted by: Bret at September 12, 2003 8:44 PM
Heh. Yeah, I wondered at that myself; North Korea isn't exactly a civil-rights and worker's-rights paradise. Possibly Lasn knows ethical places to get stuff made, there, though; I suppose stranger things have happened, though I admit it seems far-fetched.

Yikes -- thanks for pointing that one out, sir! I have duly corrected it, and am a bonehead.

So, Lasn says 'Sure we’re selling a shoe, but what we’re really selling is an idea.'
Glad to see that Adbusters has finally accepted the fundamental principle of branding.

yeah, i'm still on the fence about the unswoosh shoe, but i have to admit it's an intriguing idea. still, i go with the new balance's that are MADE IN THE USA. i guess i'll still wait and see what the verdict is on the unswoosh shoes.

Whether the shoes are made in a unionized factory or a non-unioned factory, the fact of the matter is, it will be cheaper to make the shoes. Salaries are going to be lower, and all that. I don't see very much wrong with having other contries create products, as long as the workers are treated fairly and that they recieve benefits and fair wages. Problem is it takes jobs away from people in our own country.
It may surprise you to know that sweatshops do exist in Canada and the United States.

I think these shoes are a great idea. A thing to remember everyone, Nike doesn't consider whether or not the people making the shoes are being treated fairly or not, they only consider the cheapest production costs. Abusing the need of those in third world countries to have a job is different then employing them to make shoes at fair wages (even though the wages may be lower than in your own country).
