A novelist in France has written a book that uses SMS slang. From Yahoo News:

Thus an example passage in the book has a Dtektive (detective) asking the villain: "6 j t'aspRge d'O 2 kologne histoar 2 partaG le odeurs ke tu me fe subir?"

Which, once expanded and translated, would come across as "What if I spray you with cologne so you can share the smells you make me suffer?"

Other sentences showcase the French equivalents of terms along the same lines as English Internet equivalents that have given rise to "LOL" (for Laugh Out Loud), D8 (for date), OMG (for Oh My God) and OvR8d (for overrated).

(Thanks to Boing Boing for this one!)

...er, yes, but...
can anyone not using AOL Europe (which, when expanded, sounds really weird: "America On-Line Europe"), or over the age of 19 going to be able to read it?
Perhaps like Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange," Orwell's "1984," and Welsh's "Trainspotting" it will include a lexicon in the back to aid in interpretation?

And has anyone else encountered ppl IRL who are so taken with/deep into IM culture that they actually use IM shorthand in RW conversation?
I used to work with a SWF who spent a lot of time online and IMing. During converstations, she would tell me how something made her "Laugh Out Loud," and state "In My Humble Opinion," etc. It was very odd, because she and I HAD IM'd a few times (I confess, I was trying to get her into bed), so I knew how into it she was, but how many people actually say "I Laughed Out Loud" IRL?
And is this the NadSat/NewSpeak dynamic in action? The reduction of words to symbols and acronym is reminiscent of NewSpeak, and the deliberate obfuscation of meaning is something we see a lot in teen peer groups -- seeking to confuse or exclude the adult world from their culture -- like NadSat did.

We live "in interesting times," indeed.

That is a damn interesting point. I have, actually, while laughing in a conversation with friends, actually thought -- not spoken, but thought -- "wow, I'm LOLing."

I think this novel is probably doomed to the same curiousity remainder bin in which sits that insane novel some guy wrote like 100 years ago, in which he never once uses the letter "e", just to show he can.

An officemate and I used to say, "Roffle, roffle" ("ROTFL, ROTFL") in a Hamburgler-style, "robble robble" whenever something mildly funny happened. And, I believe from time to time we would actually use the word "lol" but only when someone did something which attempted to be humourous, but was decidedly not.

marc: irony exempts many things, in my book. ;)
However, I could not understand another co-worker from that same job who looked like Paulie (sp?) Shore, but slightly better looking, who would come out with things like, "Awright, let's bust a move on outta this place," -- in 1997!! -- without a hint of irony or awareness.

clive: and that other "great work of stunt writing" Eunoia where each chapter only features a specific vowel. I worked with Christian at Chapters at the same time as the woman I mentioned above, and the Paulie-Shore-look-a-like, and I can assure you that he takes this stuff deadly seriously (he laboured for ten years on the damned thing!)

And he'd likely find some reason to defend the French book that started this whole thread, too...

I haven't read Euonia yet! I actually like Christian's writing a lot, though, and wanna read Euonia. This is reminding me to order it.
