How to imagine 10 dimensions

Okay, so, we all know that many of today's theoretical physicists of "string theory" claim that reality exists in ten dimensions. But who the heck actually claims to be able to visualize this? Half the time it sounds about as ridiculous as the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

So hie the to the web site for Rob Bryanton's book Imagining the Tenth Dimension, where he has crafted a surprisingly good Flash-based primer on how to wrap your noodle around a ten-dimensional universe. Or would that be universes? Universii? Anyway, check out the animation; it's good! You probably won't even need to read the book afterwards --though technically speaking, a differently-dimensioned version of yourself already has.

(Thanks to Fishy for this one!)

I would just like to point out that the "Flatland" he mentions early on is a real book, about a 2D-beings travels in the 3D world. It can be found in it's entriely with a simple Google.

Yes, and Flatland is a spectacularly cool book, too! I read it back in elementary school and it fried my tiny mind.

It all sounds a little new-agey to me, like that film "What the Bleep". When he gets to the 5th dimension it gets kind of vague— one moment it is a time travel device (folding 4th through 5th) the next it represents different outcomes through choice...?

If all the possible universes fit within ten dimensions, then shouldn't be possible to specify an exact point in space and time within any of them, using only ten numbers? Even in theory, this is not going to be possible.

I prefer to think about higher dimensions in purely geometrical terms :)

What that guys said makes sense even tho it may be a different way of looking at it. He does use originally widly accepted dimensional theory (1,2,3,4th dimensions) to elaborate on the higher ones.

I never thought I'd have an idea on how to imagine anything higher than 4th. Good stuff.

intepid, that's an incredibly cool posting on your blog! And yeah, he's a bit vagueish when he talks about the differently-outcomed universii ...

nova9, it's nice, eh?

New Book by Dr. Paul Spice, The Watchers out now, explains what is happening in those extra 6 dimensions! If you want a copy go to http://3mpub.com/spice/

This is a brief description of the book;
The Da Vinci Code is a diversion, a subterfuge intended to deflect attention from an even more ancient secret -- an enigma first discovered by the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt and kept hidden for millennia by a secret society dating back more than four thousand years. For all that time, the secret has remained safely hidden, guarded by its keepers. However, human knowledge is not static and the dim outlines of that which was lost are even now dimly perceived on the frontiers of science. For modern physics speaks of many universes composed of ten dimensions, each rolled up into its own subatomic space, isolated from all the others by a wall of impenetrable space-time. Yet, the same experiments that describe these tiny self-contained universes also hint that a disastrous rip in the fabric of space-time is imminent, that the calamity prophesied by the ancient Ruler-Priests of the Upper and Lower Nile is about to come true. It is to prevent this calamity predicted by both pharaoh and physicist that the secret society was formed, and for which it has been waiting, watching, and preparing. On the inevitable day when time contends with no time, when order turns to chaos, and when humanity totters on the brink of extinction, there will be but one organization equipped to save the world, The Watchers.
