Vote for invasion
Sorry that I’ve not been updating this week — I’m in Las Vegas at the Black Hat Security Briefings Conference. I’ll post some of the fun stuff I encounter when I get back tomorrow.
Interestingly, this is the first time I’ve ever been in Vegas, and because I’m trying to do this on the cheap, I’m staying in a crappy hotel in the low-rent area of Vegas. It’s quite amazing how deeply screwed-up are the poor ‘hoods in this city. It would be banal to point out the obvious ironies — i.e. that there’s a Niagara Falls of cash thundering in the casinos only a few miles away, even as the local crack addicts get into tooth-loosening brawls over who gets the last can of Lysol. But what struck me more is the weird mix of hopefulness and total despair that haunts the streets of decrepit Vegas: Everyone seems balanced between a) striving incredibly hard for some big score just around the corner, and b) just giving the hell up once and for all, with neither a) nor b) dominant.
These are my massive cultural generalizations, of course, and probably have all the accuracy of those of a Victorian anthropologist. But it’s a weird, weird part of town.

From an interview with ethnobotanist and anthropologist Wade Davis:
One of the cultures you celebrate in Light at the Edge of the World is the Inuit. What do you most admire about them?
Davis: The Inuit didn’t fear the cold; they took advantage of it. During the 1950s the Canadian government forced the Inuit into settlements. A family from Arctic Bay told me this fantastic story of their grandfather who refused to go. The family, fearful for his life, took away all of his tools and all of his implements, thinking that would force him into the settlement. But instead, he just slipped out of an igloo on a cold Arctic night, pulled down his caribou and sealskin trousers, and defecated into his hand. As the feces began to freeze, he shaped it into the form of an implement. And when the blade started to take shape, he put a spray of saliva along the leading edge to sharpen it. That’s when what they call the “shit knife” took form. He used it to butcher a dog. Skinned the dog with it. Improvised a sled with the dog’s rib cage, and then, using the skin, he harnessed up an adjacent living dog. He put the shit knife in his belt and disappeared into the night.
